Media Issues 3: Social Media

Social media is defined as a group of new online medias which includes one or more of these characteristics- participation, openness, community, conversation, and connectedness as detailed in an e-book, What is Social Media? (Spannerworks.com,2007). It can contain many different elements such as text, images, audio and video. Technologies used on the site such as wikis, vlogs and podcasts typically promote interaction between its users with each other as well as with the site.

In my opinion, many people are attracted to social media sites because as the term implies, it provides the opportunity to interact with people and content from all around the world. Myspace, Friendster, YouTube and Wikipedia are amongst the most popular social media sites at the moment. Some of the issues that should be considered are the technical problems that might occur as well as social problems brought along with increased interaction.

For example, I have a profile on Myspace.com and lately, there has been an increase in the number of spam comments that I receive. It is from completely random people and is a distraction from the actual content of my profile. Some of these messages also run the risk of carrying viruses or other threats. I also have no control on the people who can view my profile so therefore there is a risk of unwanted attention or contact from any individual.
